I wanted to share additional info about Omnivore’s shutdown, and ways to use your Omnivore data going forward.
It’s been an incredible journey building Omnivore into a read-it-later service we’re proud of. Our team announced earlier this week that we’re joining ElevenLabs. On a personal note, I’m excited to continue making reading and listening more accessible.
Here’s some important info about what comes next:
Omnivore will support exports through November 30, 2024. We had to make the difficult decision to wind down the service quickly due to increasingly high costs of running Omnivore in recent months. We understand the timeline is a concern and will cover these costs through the end of the month—you can export your Omnivore data through November 30, 2024.
What does it mean for my information to be deleted? We plan to erase user data from the service after this period, including links, highlights, folders, and personal user data. We’re doing this to ensure the best interest of privacy for our user community.
What is the ElevenReader app? The ElevenReader app is what we’re working on next—it’s a very cool text-to-speech reader app built on ElevenLabs voice tech. It’s not a dedicated read-it-later app, but it’s a great way to listen to any PDF, text, ePub or article for free. We’re excited about its future and our team is already building new features like RSS feed subscriptions, and we hope you’ll give it a try for iOS or Android.
How can I self-host my Omnivore? Our open-source user community has developed self-hosting support for Omnivore here.
What other apps could I use if I move off Omnivore? We recommend checking out Reader by Readwise (paid service) or Wallabag (open-source), which are great options for read-it-later apps and both have plugins to work with Obsidian. Readwise has released an Omnivore importer you can check out, as well. There are many other options being discussed in our Discord.
We want to sincerely thank the Omnivore community for being a part of our journey. We’ve given Omnivore our all, and it’s encouraging to see open-source developers continuing our vision.
Thanks to everyone for their support, we truly appreciate it.
